Premiership One Format

There will be two new innovations for this season’s Premiership One clubs. During the Premiership League programme, league points will be awarded in a similar format to the Super 12 competition – 4 points will be awarded for a win – 2 points will be awarded for a draw – 1 point will be awarded to a team that loses a match by 7 points or less – 1 point will be awarded to a team scoring 4 tries or more in a match.

The top 8 teams in the Premiership at the end of the league season will qualify for the Championship/play-off phase of the season.

Played over three weeks the Championship will conclude with a Grand Final at Twickenham, the winners of which will qualify for the Heineken Cup. The play-off phase will see clubs 1-4 in the league phase play at home to clubs placed 8-5 respectively. The winners qualify for the semi-finals.

European rankings will also be decided during the play-off phase. Clubs will qualify for the Heineken Cup through their position in the league programme as well as the Grand Final winners. Full details of the play-off schedule and regulations will be announced prior to the commencement of the season together with the criteria for European qualification.
